St Francis Bay
In 1575, Portuguese explorer Manual de Perestrelo anchored in this tranquil bay and named it Bahia de Sao Francisca after the St Francisca monastery in his hometown of Santareme. This name eventually evolved into what we know today as St Francis Bay.

This scenic holiday destination is tucked amid lush, green dunes that embrace the stunning coastline of the Bay of St Francis. The area is frequented by dolphins and whales, playing in the waters while gulls lazily call from above.
Located just an hour from Port Elizabeth, St Francis Bay offers a serene escape on a pristine, untouched stretch of the Eastern Cape coastline. Its distinctive whitewashed, thatched houses, expansive tidal canals, and long, unspoiled beaches create a unique setting unlike any other in South Africa. In fact, it’s home to the highest concentration of thatch roofs globally.
The Kromme River, stretching 10km from its mouth, winds inland to provide a haven for fishing enthusiasts and water sports lovers alike. Connected to this river is a stunning marina, where the elegant white-walled, thatched houses are mirrored in the calm waters of the canals.
For both golf and water sports enthusiasts, St Francis Bay is an ideal destination. The area is home to two golf courses, including the renowned Jack Nicklaus Links course, which is rapidly becoming a top wedding venue in South Africa. Water sports fans can take advantage of everything from world-class surfing at Bruce’s Beauties to windsurfing, kiteboarding, jet skiing, canal cruises, whale and dolphin watching, and onshore or offshore fishing.
Less than an hour away, national safari reserves offer the chance to spot the Big Seven, including whales and sharks. The Addo Elephant National Park teems with elephants, while the Seaview Lion Park provides close encounters with lion cubs. Tsitsikamma, also nearby, is famous for the Otter Trail hikes, the Big Tree, and activities like bungy jumping, black water tubing, and tree-top canopy tours, perfect for adrenaline seekers.
St Francis Bay is a rare gem where visitors can either relax on the beach or use it as a base for exciting adventures.
